The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago makes history as one of the earliest applied art and design colleges in the country. Originally founded in 1916 as The Commercial Arts School, the college joined The Art Institutes system in 1995. Today, the college is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association and authorized by the Illinois Board of Higher Education.
The school is housed in two downtown Chicago locations, with the main campus in the Merchandise Mart, the world’s largest commercial building and wholesale design center, and a satellite campus on the corner of Lake and Wabash avenues, which features student-run restaurant The Backstage Bistro. Student housing is available in the newly opened Automatic Lofts, which features furnished loft apartment suites with private bedrooms and on-site housing staff.
Full-time programs are offered on a year-round basis. Working students may also pursue degrees by attending evening and weekend classes. The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago also offers accelerated online courses in conjunction with the Art Institute of Pittsburgh as a supplement to traditional courses for students enrolled on campus. In addition, the school offers special summer programs for high school educators, and a five-day summer studio programs for high school students.
