College History

Bethel University is a located in Arden Hills, Minnesota and is a faith-based university. Aside from Bethel University academics, one of the biggest draws to is the face that it is rooted in Evangelical Christianity and those beliefs are at the core of how the students, faculty, and staff regard higher education and its relationship to the world. The ideals of the college are expressed in their motto: "At Bethel, we are a community working together in Christ's name so that we can transform our world". This institution has a student population of about 6,400 from diverse walks of life all over the world.

Although Bethel University location lies currently in Minnesota; it was founded in 1871 in Chicago, Illinois. What started as a small Baptist seminary for Swedish immigrants soon saw a merging almost 50 years later in 1914 with Bethel Academy in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Bethel Academy became, in 1931 Bethel Junior College. Within 15 years the junior college witnessed a great deal of growth and the addition of a four year liberal arts program was added in 1947. The Bethel Junior College then became known as Bethel College and Seminary. To accommodate its growing number of student enrollments, the school moved from Saint Paul to Arden Hills in 1972. In 2004, the school witnessed its last big change; the name was changed to Bethel University. Since the inception of the university in the late nineteenth century, religion has always played an important role in the Bethel University History and it has maintained that tradition even in present day.
